Creating a truly recovery-friendly workplace requires more than a well-written employee handbook. It calls for intentional actions that address the physical and mental needs of employees in recovery while creating a culture of support, respect, and understanding.
Story Time…
Years ago, I worked for an organization that treated addiction. Ironically, we often hosted events (both internally and externally) where alcohol was served. While i’m not in recovery myself, I had colleagues who were, and it felt irresponsible to promote alcohol in such settings.
I raised my concerns with my manager. To my surprise, they were open to discussing the issue. While we didn’t immediately change the company’s broader approach, we collaborated to create a protocol for our team. On our next team call, my manager acknowledged the potential challenges of these events for employees in recovery and assured the team that anyone who wanted to excuse themselves from events with alcohol was fully supported.
As a certified addiction counselor, I also offered confidential support to any colleagues who needed it. Though we didn’t change the entire company, we made our team a safer, more understanding space. It was a small step, but one that proved impactful. This experience reinforced that meaningful change often starts with conversations and intentional actions.
What Does a Recovery-Friendly Workplace Look Like?
Recovery-friendly workplaces create an environment where employees feel supported and empowered in their recovery journey. Here’s how organizations can take actionable steps beyond the basics:
1. Eliminate Substance Use at Work-Sponsored Events
Inclusive events free of alcohol or other substances ensure everyone feels comfortable and welcome.
2. Offer Recovery-Specific Benefits
Expand Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) to include recovery coaching, peer support networks, and flexibility for attending recovery meetings or appointments.
3. Create Confidential Support Systems
Designate trained individuals, like certified counselors or peer specialists, who employees can privately reach out to for support.
4. Provide Recovery Training for Leadership and Staff
Equip managers and team leaders with the tools to understand addiction and recovery. Train staff on reducing stigma and creating a culture of compassion and support.
5. Prioritize Mental Health and Wellness
Offer resources such as mindfulness spaces, wellness programs, and mental health support. Ensure employees can take time for self-care without fear of judgment.
6. Create Space for Open Dialogue
Encourage conversations about recovery. Host panels, invite guest speakers, or share stories to normalize recovery and reduce stigma.
7. Implement Flexible Policies
Recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all. Allow flexible scheduling, remote work, and other accommodations that support employees’ unique recovery needs.
