As we welcome 2025, participating in Dry January presents an excellent opportunity to reflect on our drinking habits and explore healthier alternatives. Notably, during the pandemic, while alcohol sales surged, the non-alcoholic beverage market also experienced significant growth. Online sales of non-alcoholic and low-alcohol beverages in the U.S. increased by 315% in 2021, compared to a 26% increase in online sales of regular alcoholic beverages.
This shift is crucial, considering the substantial impact of alcohol on public health. Excessive alcohol use is responsible for about 178,000 deaths in the United States each year, shortening the lives of those who die by an average of 24 years. The economic burden is equally staggering, with alcohol misuse costing the U.S. approximately $249 billion annually.
In response to these concerns, it’s encouraging to see the rise of dry bars and establishments offering creative mocktails in vibrant, alcohol-free environments. Check your local area for venues which have embraced this trend.
This January (and beyond), consider supporting these establishment types and embrace the benefits of mindful drinking. Cheers to a healthier start to the new year! 🥂
